Conan notices a lantern that Genta found inside the truck and realizes who the killer is. Using Agasa, Conan reveals that the second truck driver, Shuchirou Tarumi, is actually the murderer. Conan discloses that Tarumi killed Nakamine in an isolated location near the village before returning the truck and meeting with the other villagers. As evidence, Conan shows that the lantern found by Genta was actually a dictation machine on which Nakamine's voice was recorded. Tarumi takes Haibara hostage and tries to escape, but is ultimately captured. Conan reveals that Tarumi was fed up with being blackmailed for stealing money from the firefly project and from Nakamine's company, thus justifying the crime.
